Our team partnered with Fujitsu and the mechanical engineer to design a custom variable refrigerant flow retrofit that fit inside the existing air handlers, the first of its kind in Canada.

The result: dramatic natural gas savings, full mandate compliance, and a model BC Hydro is now studying for the rest of the school district.

Gracemar Farms

Alpine partnered with Gracemar Farms in Chilliwack to deliver a custom dairy chiller retrofit that solved chronic ammonia issues and extended equipment life.

The retrofit integrated an advanced clean-room design and heat recovery, reclaiming waste heat to provide warm water for livestock and boiler preheat.

The result: a more sustainable, cost-efficient system built to last for decades. When manufacturers need a reference site for what their equipment can really do, this is the one they show.

VRF Retrofit · First of its kind in Canada

Older schools. A boiler heating system running at roughly 70 percent efficiency. A provincial mandate to be carbon-free by 2035. A post-COVID requirement for significantly more fresh air. And a hard constraint: zero disruption to students or staff during the school year.

Most contractors looked at the project and walked.

Our team partnered with Fujitsu and the mechanical engineer to design a custom variable refrigerant flow retrofit, the first installation of its kind in Canada. We rebuilt the existing air handlers with custom-engineered refrigerant coils. We programmed expansion valves to modulate down to 15 percent load when demand was light, then ramp back to 100 percent on call. We kept the original boilers as backup for the coldest weeks of the year. The new system carries the buildings the rest of the year.

The result: dramatic natural gas reductions, alignment with BC's 2030/2035 carbon-free mandate, and a replicable retrofit model that BC Hydro and other school districts are now studying.
